On the syn(es)thetic metaphysics of Laza Kostić

Abstract

In the following article I will sketch the metaphysical attitude of the Serbian poet and philosopher Laza Kostić. Despite the fact that he didn’t leave us a hermetical philosophical system, Kostić may be considered as a thinker who insisted on the idea of interrelatedness as the main principle of philosophy. By localizing the principle of reality in the so-called "intercrossing" Kostić became a representative of an unsubstantial relational metaphysics which is fundamentally synthetic, above all because of his insistence on the synthesis of principal thinking and empirical (scientific) knowledge but also because of his orientation upon the connections between different entities in the field of biology, physiology and anthropology. Given the fact that his metaphysics is esthetically motivated it could be related to the project of synesthetics in a broader sense of a discipline which intends to create esthetical harmony by merging different areas or opposite phenomena within these areas. The realization of the metaphysical need becomes in Kostić an esthetical dimension; metaphysics and synesthetics are here in a synthetic relationship because of which metaphysics becomes synesthetical.
